ValveTek Utility Services, Inc.

ValveTek Utility Services Inc. is a nationwide water utility service contactor who maintains a strategic focus on water quality and water conservation in the water industry.

We operate within all areas of municipal and private water distribution systems, providing services such as; hydrant and valve work, asset mapping and engineering programs, leak detection and GPS mapping, and a special patented drinking water pipeline infrastructure rehabilitation program called NO-DES. NO-DES technology was designed as a solution to conventional and wasteful methods hydrant flushing through flushing programs.

How NO-DES Works

The Neutral Output Discharge Elimination System (NO-DES) flushing method is an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional water main flushing. Water quality is improved without wasting millions of gallons of potable water. Instead of water flowing out of fire hydrants and running to waste, the NO-DES process uses a trailer or truck mounted pumping, filtering, and rechlorinating system that continuously circulates the water within the targeted area of water distribution main.

The NO-DES unit is connected with large hoses between two selected fire hydrants, creating a temporary loop in the water distribution system. ValveTek operators use AWWA prescribed velocities, passing the water through a series of Absolute 1.0 micron filter bags and remove all sediment and particulate matter at 5 ft/second. Disinfectant/chlorine can be added through a timed slow-drip pump to further improve water quality, residuals, and safety. Inline turbidity meters indicate when turbidity levels have reached below 1.0 NTU. Tests are taken throughout the operations and results are reported for the client daily.

Why you should use NO-DES Flushing

All water utilities are required by Federal, State, Local and in-house standards to perform flushing maintenance operations within their distribution systems to maintain a safe and healthy drinking water quality during the delivery process to their customers. The patented NO-DES Flushing System allows all water utilities to perform flushing protocols and maintain their distribution systems’ assets while improving water quality during any inclement weather or water shortage. Since NO-DES is a Zero-Liquid-Discharge system you can flush water anytime, anywhere; No more dirty water complaints and no service shut-downs for customers.

Each NO-DES Unit offers comprehensive, measurable, and recordable data on the integrity of the system itself – and the water flowing through it. The Control Panel analyses what’s happening during the flushing operation in real-time, and our highly trained operators record and provide hard copy reports on what exactly happened during each flushing sequence.

NO-DES is simple, and it makes sense. Flush water without discharging and filter out the contaminants and debris – that’s it. The water doesn’t leave your system, there’s no service disruptions, and no dangerous chemicals used to try and make your drinking water safer. NO-DES uses velocity and filtration to clean the pipeline infrastructure of your system and improve the quality of water that resides within it.

AWWA Standards

NO-DES Operational Flushing follows all AWWA Standards that are required for water main flushing. Our on-board pump circulates the water at the required velocity for that main size to be stripped clean on any dirt, debris, and biofilm. NO-DES can flush water at 5 Ft/Second in nearly any area of your system with mainlines 12” and smaller, including dead-ends and no-flush zones.

Mobile Flushing Unit

NO-DES Technology is mobile as it is utilized onboard a towed trailer unit. It is easily parked on a side street or shoulder of a road. Cones and hazard lights are placed for traffic control. Visible equipment on the trailer will be two large stainless steel filtration vessels, a few reels of hose, a blue covered engine, an operators panel, and a yellow burro for easy hose reeling.

Each NO-DES rig is equipped with two large filtration vessels that hold 24 Absolute 1.0 micron rated disposable filter bags. They’re refilled as needed and are common trash once used. Continuous flushing can take place during operations even during filter change outs.

Filter bags have a variable cost associated with them that directly correlates with the current condition of the system being worked on. The dirtier it is the more filters are used. Most customers can expect to use about 2-3 change out per day of flushing.

Control Panel

The center piece of the NO-DES utility truck is the Operators Control Panel. When ValveTek operators are contracted to work for a city they use the operators control panel to detect, display, and record all processes and occurrences during a flushing sequence. Data for reports are developed using the information given by this component.

From the the control panel, operators can administer precise amount of velocity needed for accurate cleaning on any given segment of main in any given area of your distribution system. Our team can gauge pressures within the main and identify tuberculation, corrosion, leaks, and most commonly downed valves that were believed to be open.

Chlorine Injection Pump

Crews can test, measure, and increase or decrease chlorine residuals within the system by using a drip chlorine pump for chlorine injection over controlled amount of time.

Chlorine testing can take place throughout the days work by sampling inlet and outlet water periodically and boosting residuals if needed.

Sustained Velocity Flow

NO-DES technology allows operators to adjust the rate of flow to exact AWWA standard velocity requirements in order to efficiently remove all particulate matter and biofilms from within the main.

The flushing equipment can effectively flush main diameters of up to 14″ inches at 3ft per second of velocity and up to 5ft per second for mains 12″ inches and smaller. It doesn’t depressurize or over-pressurize the system at any point of the operation and customers experience no service disruptions or dirty water complaints.

Turbidity Meters

Within the NO-DES units control panel there are two electronic inline turbidity meters that analyze water coming in and out of the flushing unit. No flush is concluded until the outlet meter reads below 1.0 NTU turbidity. Turbidity levels are recorded during each flush and included on daily log reports.

This simple device offers valuable insight on your water quality in real-time. Most handheld testing measures will not give you ratings as accurate as the on-board meters we’ve equipped the NO-DES units with.

The Burro

The Burro is a forklift mounted to the back of the truck that’s purpose is to automatically pick up, move, reel, and unreel hose for flushing operations.

It’s slim design makes laying hose out for flushing easy. It’s used only for the set up and break down of the flushing site and can take care of hundreds of feet of laid hose in just minutes.

Traffic Control

The NO-DES truck does not bring traffic to a stop. Our hoses can be tucked away next to curbs and can run down streets without even being noticed all day. When a vehicle has to cross over a hoses with a vehicle, ValveTek crews will lay ramp down to keep the traffic flow (and water flow) moving.

Each vehicle provided by ValveTek comes equipped with all necessary cautionary warning lights, cones, ramps, and road flares.

Filtered Flushing

NO-DES advanced water main flushing programs temporarily impose high-flow or high-usage conditions to targeted segments of main pipeline. As NO-DES flushes, the water is filtered through 24 or 36 filter bags rated at Absolute 1.0 Micron.  NO-DES can push and loop water endlessly, with no discharging to waste, and sustaining GPM flow rate velocities of up to 5 feet per second in mains 12” or smaller.

As the water passes through the truck, the onboard control panel analyses the water quality and pipeline condition in real-time and measures turbidity, pressure, velocity, chlorine levels, and GPM. Each flush runs until the water reads down below 1.0 NTU turbidity – this can take 15 minutes, 45 minutes, or 150 minutes; ValveTek stays for as long as it takes to reach that level of water quality!

We can flush miles of main, over multiple city blocks, all from one location. With proper valve manipulations, there’s no need to break down and set up the truck more than once per day. The NO-DES unit, with its’ powerful on-board pump, can pull, circulate, filter and clean water from one set up position and can flush clean tens of thousands of lineal footage per day.

The trucks two filtration vessels allow for filter bags to be changed out during flushing, and while water is running through the machine, keeping the flushing truck running non-stop!

Year Round Flushing Capabilities

Due to NO-DES being a zero-liquid-discharge operation you can flush anywhere at any time; Night and day flushing, freezing weather, and during droughts! Flush 24/7/365

  • Flush after main repairs and waste no water
  • Eliminate property damage
  • Eliminate NPDES issues and fines
  • Flush during droughts and water restrictions

Complete Diagnostics

Each NO-DES utility truck comes with everything you need to manage real-assets, in real time, effectively – and to diagnose and remedy water quality issues at hand.

From the Operator’s Panel, technicians can detect:

  • Turbidity levels
  • Organic matter
  • Chlorine residuals
  • GPM flow
  • Velocity
  • Pressure
  • Unknown leaks
  • Tuberculation
  • Nitrification
  • Ammonia
  • Dissolved oxygen
  • Iron and pH

About Service Disruptions and Traffic Control

During operations there are no service disruptions at the customers tap or in their home. Traffic control issues are handled very easily in most areas. NO-DES hoses are laid out smoothly and can support cars driving over them with ramp supports. Each ValveTek vehicle is accompanied with standard cautionary and warning lights as well as cones and road flares.

Water Quality

ValveTek’s contract flushing services filter and clear drinking water of all aesthetically unpleasing characteristics, bad odors, and it removes all particulate matter – down to below 1 NTU. Chlorine residuals are analyzed and can be balanced when needed.

NO-DES offers the industry one of the strongest methods available for biofilm removal. If a system suffers from nitrification problems – there’s a good chance that it has a biofilm problem. Biofilm can be very difficult to remove with just conventional hydrant flushing, and only comprehensive water quality testing will tell you if you’ve succeeded in removing the organic matter from inside the pipe. Biofilm is sticky and can absorb and retain chemicals and components that make nitrification and other water quality problems possible.

Areas subject to an above average build up of biofilm, manganese, debris, and sediment:

  • Dead-ends
  • Low pressure zones
  • No drainage/No flush zones
  • Low flow areas
  • Neglected segments of main

NO-DES can flush dead-ends by moving more water through the pipe at a higher velocity with no water waste and cleaning out the interior of that pipe better than any other method of water pipeline maintenance.

Chlorine Residuals

Many problems can occur from an imbalanced in CL2 residuals within your water system.

The NO-DES flushing unit carries a chlorine injection pump that can be utilized to distribute chlorine to balance residuals back to required levels on an as needed basis. This is upon request from the utility only.

Leak Detection

When a NO-DES unit connects to your system it can read and sense the infrastructures vitals. If there’s an unknown leak, or a closed valve, ValveTek’s flushing crew will find the problem and identify it in a report. We’ve found as many as 25 valves in a single day that were said to be in open positions but were found to be closed, one being on a transmission line.

ValveTek Utility Services Inc., offers an entire range of water utility contractor needs for field operations services and maintenance on municipal systems. See our Other Services

The White-Cup Test doesn’t work anymore: Biofilm can be found in water with turbidity levels as low as 10 NTU but cannot be seen by the human eye below that.

The AWWA standard velocity rating most recently recommended for removal of biofilm in pipeline 12” inches or less is 5’ ft/sec. Conventional flushing reaches only 3’ ft per/sec of velocity during flushes and has minimal valid testing opportunities.

Not only does NO-DES reach 5’ ft/sec of velocity but it also allows the operator to prescribe specific paths of water at required velocities needed to strip and remove biofilm and all other debris from the interior of water mainlines.

As ValveTek removes the biofilm from the pipeline during flushing operations, our filters will catch all of material removing it from the system and filling our filtration bags. NO-DES technology cleans pipeline like nothing else that’s ever been available.

Hach Meters:

NO-DES units are equipped with two electronic inline turbidity meters that analyze and grade the water in real-time as the flushing sequence is running.

One meter is designated for water coming in to the unit and the other meter is designated to the water flowing out of the unit after filtration.

Operators will analyze and record turbidity ratings throughout the work day. A flushing sequence is deemed complete only once both meters read below 1 NTU of turbidity.

Iron Manganese

High levels of iron manganese can cause infrastructure assets and pipeline to degrade. Water quality will degrade and customer satisfaction can fall due to the presence of iron manganese.

Conventional flushing can cause IM problems to stay low but can also do harm as it stirs up this particulate and leaves much behind to be taken in by home service lines. NO-DES Filtered Flushing ensures nothing is left behind and that all particulate matter is filtered out before flushing ends.

Sediment and Sand

Pipelines need a high-flow of water running through them at all times in order to stay clean and healthy. Large transmission pipes achieve this easily, but smaller, further away, pipeline has a more difficult time due to low flow or scarce use. Opening and flushing a fire hydrant conventionally imposes these sorts of high-flow conditions in order to clear the pipes of sediments, sand, or debris but wastes thousands of gallons of water when doing so.

NO-DES is the most effective method for removing debris, sediment, and sand from the interior of water main pipelines. Our powerful pump imposes the necessary high-flow conditions needed for healthy water pipeline activity. Velocity and filtration are the keys to our operations and it’s proven to work and remedy exactly what the problem may be.

Chloramine and Nitrification

NO-DES can strip through the interior of your water mains and filter clean the water that resides in it – removing nutrients and particulates down to Absolute 1.0 Micron in size. During our operations we can test chlorine levels and administer proper adjustments needed to balance chlorine residuals to system specific standards.

Nitrification can be difficult to control once it’s present. More than likely the reason for this problem can be found at the source of the waters flow. The pipeline infrastructure in which the water is traveling through contributes to the problem in its’ own way. When biofilm is present, nitrification can sometimes be particularly persistent and difficult to get rid of. Conventional flushing doesn’t remove biofilm, and therefore it’s not solving your nitrification problem.

Contaminants and Pathogens

In the event of an emergency, NO-DES utility trucks can provide assistance with removing water-borne pathogens by quarantining an area by segmenting off a footprint and keeping the water running and filtering through a perpetual flush.

Discolored Water & Bad Odor

Flushing with a NO-DES Flushing Program is one of the most effective and efficient ways of removing odors and discolorations in drinking water. Our filters will give your water a new look and clean it down to pure H20. NO-DES will clear out the interior of the mainlines with 5’/sec of water velocity removing any sand, sediment, rust, debris, iron manganese, and biofilm to improve and remedy the source of your discoloration and aesthetic problems.

NO-DES utility trucks provide this information in real-time. We use the most robust data collection techniques for measuring water quality and analyzing the condition of the pipeline asset that has been targeted.

Net Zero Liquid Discharge Technology

Municipal level water conservation is an important, untapped, area for utility managers to save money through. Water authorities can always ask their customers to conserve water through not watering their lawns or taking shorter showers – but only with NO-DES can they literally save millions upon millions of gallons of water right away but replacing old conventional methods of water main flushing with NO-DES Advanced Water Main Flushing practices.

Replacing conventional and unidirectional flushing practices with a NO-DES Filtered Flushing program can help conserve millions of gallons of treated potable drinking water and the costs associated with pumping, treating, and flushing that water.

  • System Diagnostic Tool
  • Alternative to Conventional and UDF
  • Alternative to Repair and Replace
  • Non-Invasion Technology

This is a drinking water distribution system maintenance solution and is the most innovative answer to maintaining real assets and minimizing your unbilled authorized consumption of non-revenue water. NO-DES sets a new industry standard for urban drinking water management programs by requiring them to be more efficient and dependable. Conventional and UDF flushing methods are barbaric in comparison to NO-DES.

ValveTek Utility Services creates this promise by bringing the NO-DES water efficiency technology to you with well-trained water quality specialists and operators to work with you during operations in your areas of most need till a pristine level of water quality and operational integrity is achieved system-wide.

Non-Revenue Water Loss

Whether your privately owned, investor owned, or municipally owned, non-revenue water loss can be a burden. There is an untold amount of money lost every year due to water leaks and conventional maintenance protocols that waste hundreds of millions of gallons of treated drinking water.

NO-DES helps recoup some of this money by saving you the water that would of otherwise been flushed to waste in the name of maintenance and water quality.

Keep the customers happy

NO-DES delivers real quantitative data that can be displayed and focused upon in reports that prove your system is getting cleaner – there’s no denying what is found in our filter bags after we flush water mains.

You’ll be able to retire old conventional methods of water main flushing and replace them with NO-DES as your new water flushing protocol. It’s environmentally friendly and more effective and efficient then UDF or conventional. There’s no water discharge with NO-DES so there is no worry about storm water problems as well.

Water utility officials have had almost no alternative options when it comes flushing for water quality due to government mandates, public pressure, relentless droughts, or emergency situations.

It’s important to provide a consistent message to the public when it comes to conservation. Everyone does their part, and NO-DES technology makes that a possibility for water utilities nationwide.

Drought Resilient Flushing

When a drought has stricken your area, flushing operations may be halted due to governmental mandates and low water supplies. Once your system begins to use less water, the assets will start to be exercised less and their integrity will begin to diminish. The quality of water within the system will begin to degrade and age and water quality problems can arise with almost no solutions.

Much of this will not affect the water utility company or its’ customers immediately, but a lack of flowing water over a period of time will cause extensive amounts of damage to your infrastructure and will require  labor to fix – costing an exuberant amount of money usually.

Halted flushing programs can be reestablished using NO-DES, even during a drought. NO-DES can clean your system with nearly zero restrictions and achieve far better results than conventional methods.

NO-DES can safely clear water mains:

  • During droughts
  • Dead-ends
  • Low flow/low pressure areas
  • Heavily tuberculated areas
  • No flush zones
  • Areas of high property value

Permits, Licenses, and Regulations

In the State of California, many water utilities have thought it best to contact their regional division of drinking water authority before use of NO-DES within their systems.

ValveTek is a nationwide provider of NO-DES Flushing Services and has worked in almost all major areas of the United States. Each State/district authority is different and requires attention to different things. ValveTek can provide guidelines, references, and past examples of what it takes to achieve regulatory approval in your district.

There are NO special permits or licenses needed for contracting NO-DES flushing operations to take place in your city. Clients usually only require insurance documents and city business licenses in order to commence work.
